| CARL MARIA VON WEBER: CHAMBER MUSIC FOR CLARINET - Quintet for Clarinet and String Quartet in B Flat Major, Op. 34; Variations Op. 33 from the Opera "Sylvana" for Clarinet and Piano; "Se il mio ben tu sei" for two voices, obligato clarinet and strings (WORLD PREMIER RECORDING); Melody for Clarinet and Piano; Grand Duo Concertant for Clarinet and Piano, Op. 48. Luigi Magistrelli, clarinet; Sumiko Hojo & Claudia Bracco, piano; Stefania Gianni & Stefania Sada, alto; Quartetto Andriani (Stefano Ferrario, Gian Mario Mari, violins; Claudio Andriani, viola; Alessandro Andriani, cello). The year 1811 was a very fortunate year for the clarinet. Carl Maria von Weber composed seven of his eight compositions destined for his favorite instrument. This particular affection originated from his meeting with the virtuoso clarinetist, Heinrich Baermann (1784 - 1847), one of the greatest virtuosi on the clarinet ever to have lived. Baermann's skill at producing all the nuances and musical finesse conquered the heart of Weber. The first composition Weber dedicated to Baermann was the Concertino Op. 26, which was welcomed with considerable success. This was followed by the two Concertos Opp. 73 & 74. The King of Bavaria commissioned all these works from Weber. The artistic partnership between Weber and Baermann became more and more important, as the pair often performed together until Weber's death in 1826. Baermann's great versatility together with Weber's creative instinct as regards a particular instrument, the clarinet, was capable of satisfying the elements peculiar to the early Romantic Movement. These included richness of color, dynamics and warmness of timbre, which made possible the creation of a series of works enriching the literature for the clarinet. |
