Piano Concerto in E Flat Major; Sonatas opp. 61 & 64 - Jan Novotny, piano; The Prague Philharmonia, conductor Leos Svarovsky - Jan Ladislav Dusik (1760 – 1812) is among the most significant representatives of the great wave of Czech musical emigration at the turn of the nineteenth century. As one of the first modern performers, with a radius of activities throughout the whole of Europe from England to Russia, he captivated his contemporaries with his peerless art of piano playing and his social and amorous scandals; today we are left with his remarkable works. Dusik’s piano compositions are a precursor to the poetics of Chopin; the influence made by the new style of pianos by English makers allowed the instrument to resonate in the great romantic spirit, but at the same time the classical foundation of his works prevent them from getting bogged down in excessive virtuosity. In a well-studied performance by Jan Novotny with the accompaniment of the youthful and precise Prague Philharmonia, this new digital recording of Dusik’s music speaks to us in a finely balanced version which will be of interest to many.

JAN VACLAV HUGO VORISEK - PIANO WORKS: Twelve Rhapsodies, Op. 1; Le Désir, Op. 3; Le Plaisir, Op. 4; Six Impromptus, Op. 7; Impromptu in F major; Impromptu in B flat major; Sonata in B flat minor, Op. 20; Variations in B flat major, Op. 19; Fantasias, Op. 12; Album Leaf in A major; Eclogue in C major; Rondos in G major and C major, Op. 18. Radoslav Kvapil, piano. At the time of his death in Vienna, the Czech composer Jan Václav Hugo Voríšek (1791 - 1825) was only 34 years old. Apart from studies of composition (with Tomášek in Prague, and with Hummel in Vienna), he had also obtained schooling in Philosophy and Law. In Vienna, where he settled in 1813, his talent was duly recognized, as in 1822 he became organist to the imperial court, a post which ranked him definitively alongside the foremost celebrities of Vienna´s music life. The compositional legacy he left behind is not particularly extensive but in terms of artistic value confirms his status as a major composer. His style straddles the borderline between the Classical and the Romantic. There, his keyboard output - whose virtually complete collection (except for two or three unimportant occasional pieces) is being presented here in digital format - already quite obviously augurs the advent of the Romantic era. The honorable task of interpreting the sum of Voríšek´s works for the piano was taken up here with success by Radoslav Kvapil, a leading specialist on Czech piano production, whose previous Supraphon projects have included among other titles complete sets of piano works of Leoš Janácek and Antonín Dvorák. I Penitenti al Sepolcro del Redentore (The Penitents at the Holy Sepulchre) - Magdalena Kozena, contralto; Martin Prokes, tenor; Michael Pospisil, bass; Cappella regia musicalis/Robert Hugo - The foremost representative of Bohemian/Czech music of the high Baroque era, Jan Dismas Zelenka (1679 - 1745) was the first Czech composer of oratorios. For the feast of Good Friday in 1736, his Dresden employer commissioned from Zelenka a new composition. However, it eventually failed to be performed on its destined occasion - most likely, as it did not present the usual setting of the text of one of the Gospels, but rather, of a highly exalted lyrical poem centered around the meaning of Christ’s sacrifice. This departure from the canonized Biblical treatment does not in the least diminish the work’s musical virtues, which are indeed enormous. Here, the Cappella regia musicalis, an ensemble specializing in early music, under the artistic direction of Robert Hugo, and featuring Magdalena Kožená as Mary Magdalene, constituted a team that guaranteed an exquisite outcome of this Zelenka project. The digital recording was made in the Church of St Francis, at Prague’s Convent of Saint Agnes.

  • Ivan Moravec, piano
    - Czech Philharmonic Orchestra/Jiri Belohlavek
Ivan Moravec, a pianist highly regarded throughout the world, was the only Czech artist named to a list of the 100 greatest pianists a few years ago. Although he celebrated his seventy fifth birthday in November of last year, he is still a fully active performer. In the years 1989 and 1990 Ivan Moravec made recordings of the Brahms piano concertos, which even today are sought out by those who recognize the artist’s mastery of the piano. Thoughtfully crafted details and phrasing, meticulous construction of individual parts as well as the whole, superior tone quality and admirable work with dynamics are all trademarks of Ivan Moravec’s world-class artistry. Moravec, a tireless perfectionist, invests a heaping portion of musicality into the performance of each piece. His recordings are among Supraphon’s most precious treasures. (2 CDs)

    Czech Chamber Orchestra/Ondrej Kukal
Josefa Rejcha’s numerous compositions span a variety of genres. Rejcha extensively explored the sound qualities of the string instruments, working with expressive melodies and colorful instrumentation. His concertos for violin, violin duo, cello and violin with cello were extraordinarily popular in his day. Rejcha had fundamental influence on the early works of two composers – his nephew Antonín Rejcha (1767–1836), theorist and later professor at Paris Conservatory, and Ludwig van Beethoven.

  • Jan Peruska, viola
    Prague Philharmonia/Jiri Belohlavek
The name of Czech composer Jan Václav Stamic is closely connected to a number of basic musical-historical terms, for example, the Mannheim School, Classical style, cyclic sonata form and the symphony. His sons Carl and Anton followed in their father’s footsteps as outstanding instrumentalists and composers, and the contributions of the Stamic (or Stamitz, in German) family, were fundamental to the rise of a new musical style in the second half of the 18th century. These viola concertos by all three Stamitzes were recorded by Jan Peruška, longtime 1st viola of the Prague Symphonists and member of the famous Stamic Quartet, accompanied by the Prague Philharmonia and conductor Jiri Beohlávek.
