SIX DUOS for VIOLIN and VIOLA - Nos. 1 in D Major; No. 2 in D Minor; No. 3 in G Major; No. 4 in A Major; No. 5 in C Major; No. 6 in E Flat Major: Gabriela Demeterova (violin/ viola). The violinist Gabriela Demeterova has already established an impressive discography and concert solo career, but she continues to broaden her horizons. Recently she began to systemically devote herself to the viola. The result is that she is the first person to record both parts of these Classical Period works by Stamitz. A true tour de force.

BEDRICH SMETANA: Trio in G minor
JOSEF SUK: Trio in C minor; Elegy
VITEZSLAV NOVAK: Trio Quasi Ballata
  • Smetana Trio (Jana Novakova, violin; Jan Palenicek, cello; Jitka Cechova, piano)
After the death of pianist and trio founder Josef Palenicek (1991), his son, cellist Jan Palenicek, took up leadership of the ensemble. Today, the members of the Smetana Trio follow in the footsteps of their predecessors, combining trio repertoire with solo numbers in the glorious tradition of this chamber group. This recording of trios by Czech composers is an excellent showcase for the artistic qualitites of the ensemble. The individual pieces are imbued with the full-blooded musicianship of top artists.

    JOSEF SUK (1874 – 1935): String Quartet No. 1 in B flat major, Op. 11 (1896)
Meditation on an Old Czech Hymn ‘St Wenceslas’, Op. 35 (1914)
    MAURICE RAVEL (1875 – 1937): String Quartet in F major (1902-03)
  • Panocha Quartet:
  • Jiri Panocha, 1st violin; Pavel Zejfart, 2nd violin; Miroslav Sehnoutka, viola; Jaroslav Kulhan, cello
The nearly 40 year career of the Panocha Quartet has honed their precision to perfection without dampening their musicality and enthusiasm. This new recording adds further works by Suk to their discography. Suk’s Quartet in B flat major has been performed with two different final movements: the original was presented at its 1896 premiere by the Czech Quartet, while his revised version was presented in 1915, nearly twenty years later. Both versions are recorded here for comparison, evidence of how Suk matured as a composer. In addition to the famous Meditation, the album also includes Ravel’s Quartet in F Major, shedding further light on quartet composition at the turn of the 20th century.

    JOSEF SUK (1874 – 1935): Symphony in E major, Op. 14
    ANTONIN DVORAK (1841 – 1904): Carnival – concert overture, Op. 92, B 169 (1891); In Nature’s Realm – concerto overture, Op. 91, B 168 (1891)
    Prague Symphony Orchestra/Tomas Netopil
Dvorák’s overtures In Nature’s Realm and Carnival, completed in 1892, need no introduction. The case, however, is different with Symphony in E major, which Suk began composing a mere five years later, as Dvorák’s pupil. The symphony is – notwithstanding the composer’s tender age, 23 – a manifestation of absolute artistic maturity and independence. In 1899 the work was premiered by the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Oskar Nedbal. Following the older recording by Václav Neumann with the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra, this unjustly overlooked work is brought to listeners by the Prague Symphony Orchestra under the baton of the promising young Czech conductor Tomáš Netopil. A pupil of Jirí Belohlávek and holder of a number of awards (victory in the Georg Solti Conductors’ Competition in Frankfurt, the main prize of the American Academy of Conducting in Aspen in 2003), Netopil already has a wealth of international experience behind him (Cleveland Symphony Orchestra, London Philharmonic Orchestra, NHK Symphony Orchestra Tokyo, Volksoper Wien, Teatro Regio Torino, etc.). The youthful Netopil has a firm grasp of Suk’s juvenility, however, he strips away the silt of the commonplace even from notoriously famous Dvorák works, affording them a fresh and novel sound.

  • Pavel Haas Quartet: Veronika Jarusková, 1st violin; Eva Karová, 2nd violin; Pavel Nikl, viola; Peter Jarusek, cello
Since winning the International Competition at Prague Spring 2005 and the Paolo Borciani competition in Italy in Spring 2005, the Pavel Haas Quartet has quickly become known to audiences, critics and promoters around the world as one of today’s most exciting young string quartets. Based in Prague, the ensemble has spent the past few years traveling throughout Europe to study with some of the masters of the quartet world, including members of the Quartetto Italiano, Quatuor Mosaďques and the Borodin and Amadeus Quartets. They continue to have a close association with Milan Skampa, the violist of the legendary Smetana Quartet in Prague, and Walter Levin (LaSalle Quartet) in Basel.

Radek Baborák, French horn; Wenzel Maria Fuchs, clarinet
    Baborák Ensemble

The central figures of the CD are two colleagues from the Berliner Philharmoniker – first horn Radek Baborák and first clarinet Wenzel Fuchs. On this recording, accompanied by the members of Baborak Ensemble, they present themselves both as phenomenal soloists without technical limits and as experienced chamber players. In a novel dramaturgy, they introduce lesser known and rarely recorded works (Koechlin), alongside compositions performed more frequently. The first group includes Les Confidences ("Les Confidences d'un Joueur de Clarinette") by the French composer Charles Koechlin, whose oeuvre is synonymous with film music of the first half of the 20th century. (In the case of Les Confidences, he also wrote the script for the film.) Martinu's Quartet, from his Paris period, and the more neo-classicist Serenade are splendid works yet - owing to their non-traditional configuration - to our detriment have only appeared on stages and been recorded sporadically. Nielsen’s pieces, together with the "encore" miniature by Luciano Berio, round off this very pleasant mosaic of encounters between horn and clarinet in 20th-century works.
