A SONG BOOK FOR ISABELLA - Music compiled in 1502 for Isabella d'Este. Music Antiqua of London; With Clare Wilkinson; Philip Thorby, director. Amongst the treasures of the Biblioteque Nationale de Paris is a hand written songbook compiled in 1502 by, or for, one Ludovico Milliare. This songbook contains a wonderfully rich cross section of the vocal and instrumental repertoire loved by the d'Este family of Mantua. An attractive feature of the collection is the inclusion of sacred pieces, mostly non-liturgical and apparently intended for private devotional use. Musica Antiqua of London have researched their instruments thoroughly by examining both documented and iconographic evidence, for example, analyzing contemporary paintings of the period. The custom made viols are not "copies" but are recreations using the best available scholarship. This CD offers a rare opportunity to hear the very different sound these instruments make compared to their modern counterparts from the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries.

GIACHES DE WERT (1535 – 1596): Il Secondo libro de motetti
  • Collegium Regale/Stephen Cleobury

The Flemish-born Giaches de Wert was one of many foreigners to dominate the Italian music scene in the mid to late sixteenth century, therefore to this day his music is largely unknown to many. It is the second of three books of Motets which appears on this disc, written when his skill as a madrigalist had reached its height. As part of the Kings College Choir, the choral scholars of Collegium Regale perform independently of the choir, singing a repertoire that encompasses 15th Century sacred music, jazz, folksongs and pop. Directed by Kings College’s and the BBC Singer’s renowned director Stephen Cleobury.
