This is a real raritie-CD. Inge Borkh made relatively few studio recordings but most of those that she did made have become classics, also this CD with special attention for Verdi’s Macbeth. Lady Macbeth was an important role, and one witch she made a notable impression. Not only was she perfectly able to portray the character’s malevolent determination, but she also had the type of voice that Verdi is believed to have intended for the role.

This is a really star-performances with for example Kurt Moll, the Pogner on this recording, has commented that singing the character’s long address to The Mastersingers in Act One ‘is like climbing a mountain, more and more slowly, always in second gear, never at full steam because then you would certainly get worn out halfway. Another distinguished German bass who excelled in Wagner roles, Karel Ridderbusch sings Hans Sachs. Walther is performed by the American tenor James King. He regular presence at Bayreuth between 1965 and 1975. Gundula Janowitz (Eva) possesses a pure, creamy voice with a tightly focused tone that has enabled her to excel in may areas of the lyric and lieder repertoire.

A memorable evening, because it is the only performance of the great Swedish tenor Nicolai Gedda. Accompanied by an entirely Swedish cast, but sung in German. The only one not singing in this opera, though nevertheless noted, is the mezzo-soprano Bobro Ericson. The name should, of course, be Barbro Ericson. Our sincere apologies for this mistake.

The concert performance on this recording was the only occasion on which Nicolai Gedda sang the role of Dalibor, he never performed on stage or recorded it commercially. Thanks to the enthusiasm, determination and courage of conductor Eve Queler. New York audiences have been able to hear performances of many fascinating operas outside the mainstream repertoire with first-rank soloists in concert performances of rarely-hard operas.

The French repertoire was an area in which she excelled and she was ideal for portraying Gounod’s Mireille. Vincent was sung by the Argentinean tenor Luis Lima, for most of the opera lovers famous for an other French role, that of Don José in Carmen.
