The Judaeo-Spanish songs are part of an age-old tradition. At the end of the 15th century, the Sephardi Jews (sepharad being the Hebrew word for Spain) were expelled from Spain, where they had been living for many centuries, as a result of the Catholic kings’ religious intolerance. When the Sephardim left in exile and embarked upon their diaspora, they took with them their culture, which they preserved and cherished as the symbol of their Spanish identity. The interest in this repertoire is, first and foremost, of a musical nature. Devoid of a Sephardi or indeed any other Jewish element, the ensemble merely consists of five musicians who have come across these songs in the course of their musical researches. La Roza Enflorese was born primarily out of an irresistible desire to sing and play these warm melodies, and to make them their own, to ornament the repertoire, to color it with out broad instrumental palette. The development of the arrangements has gradually been enriched with improvisations, which today are a key part of their performance.

Since 2000, the Belgian ensemble La Roza Enflorese has offered renditions of songs belonging to the Sephardic monodic repertoire. These songs, which are rooted in the oral traditiion, allow a wide range of renditions. The ensemble is composed of five musicians with varied musical interests and experience (classical, jazz, pop, etc.) and presents its songs as a meeting of ancient musical genres, traditional music and contemporary music while relying both on instrumental techniques inspired by popular music and on improvisation.
