MORNING MANTRA - Ustad Rashid Khan, vocal; Ramesh Mishra, saragni; Yogesh Samsi, tabla. Tracks: Raga Bhatiyar; Raga Alhaiya Bilawal; Raga Gaud Sarang. - It has been along time since Navras last released an album by Rashid Khan, however, this vocalist from Calcutta has proven he is a heavy weight in the classical arena. Following on from the album "Song of Shiva" (Navras 0105) we launch "Morning Mantra" a collection of three morning ragas, great for those thought provoking moments of the day. Recorded live at Sunny Towers, Calcutta, 1995. All three ragas reflect feelings of restlessness, longing and pathos (conveyed through the poetry) however; the ragas continue to provide a fine sense of structural balance.

Having sold 450,000 units in India "Reincarnation" the debut new age album from the Khan brothers is released by Navras for worldwide release. Having established themselves as classical artists carrying on the 7th generation sarod tradition, they felt it was time to nurture their 'other' musical interests. Although the album may sound savvy it gives due respect to their tradition of ragas. This is also the first time they have laid down vocal chords for an album. Reincarnation has been the belief of any tradition. From vedic times, the concept of rebirth and reincarnation has always intrigued man. As a human being reincarnates, so does music, as music is a living entity in itself. For the Khan boys every track in this album is a reincarnation of what they might have been like thousands of years ago.

Tracks: Raga Bairagi; Raga Durga; Raga Abhogi
  • Artists: Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasi, bansuri (bamboo flute); Ustad Sabir Khan, tabla
Another album by an artist that requires no further introduction. It has been quite some time since we last released an album of Hariprasad Chaurasia, here we present an album where Chaurasia plays us through the raga cycle. Taking us through a progression of morning to night ragas his flute glides through four different ragas each carefully chosen to highlight the similarities and differences between them. He begins with Raga Bairagi, which was originally popularised by Ravi Shankar and is now a fashionable morning raga. This is then followed by Madhamd Sarang, which has just one note different from Bairagi. This is then followed by raga Durga, which is a gentle and pleasant raga performed in the late afternoon or early evening. The final rendition is raga Abhogi, which opens with a dramatic tabla solo from Ustad Sabir Khan. An album for anytime of the day! This album has been licensed from unreleased material from the label Musenalp.
