In the "An Audience With..." series of titles, Navras is attempting to present the views of the maestros in relation to their performances, be it live or studio and to spell out the difference in their relative attitudes. They also talk about their audience and its relationship to music being performed. Being a record label with primary focus on live concert recordings, Navras has a sizable catalogue of such performances by various maestros as well as some studio recordings. In this series, we aim to bring the music selection quintessential to the maestro concerned.

Tracks: Sufi Qawwalis; Sajdah; Eri Sakhi; Dum Dum Ali; Apni Masti; Zihale Miskin; Babul
Apni Masti (my ecstasy) is an album of Qawwalis (traditional mystic songs) performed by Hamsar Hayat and his group from India’s capital, Delhi, featuring six songs in languages ranging from folk Hindi to Persian to modern Urdu. Hamsar is the son of Hayat Nizami Qawwal, and the nephew of the world famous Meraj Ahmad Nizami, whose families have been performing Qawwali at the Dargah (tomb) of the Chishti saint Nizamuddin Aulia in Delhi for many generations. Hamsar, 33, received his training in Qawwali music from his father, whom he sang with since he was a child and learned the nuances of Persian, Urdu and Hindi lyrics from his uncle. While both father and uncle have left indelible marks on his style, Hamsar also strives to evolve his own characteristic manner of singing. His voice has a sound classical base, as he uses elaborate improvisations and ornamentations of the classical style, such as taans (long crescendos), gamaks and murkis (vacillations of the voice). The troupe consists of all young members, accompanying Hamsar in chorus, clapping, and percussion. Hamsar and his friends are a quite sought after group in Delhi and elsewhere in India. Besides singing the Qawwalis, this group is also often invited to perform Bhajans (Hindu devotional songs) at religious gatherings – a rare quality for a Muslim group. The lyrics have been translated into English in the booklet.

WORLD MUSIC/INDIA: STRINGS ATTACHED - Sarod & Cello - Live at Royal Festival Hall, London. Tracks: Tracks: Raga Kirwani (Amaan & Ayaan & Matthew); Raga Bhairavi (Amjad Ali Khan & Matthew). This album brings together Amaan & Ayaan Ali Bangash and the cutting-edge cellist Matthew Barley, with a special guest appearance from Amjad Ali Khan. This is the most recent collaboration with the New Dehli sarod player Amjad Ali Khan, with whom he has appeared in duo recitals at London's Royal Festival Hall (This album), at the 2003 WOMAD Festivals in Australia and New Zealand, as well as on tour in India. Forthcoming performances include the St Denis Festival in Paris, in Calcutta and the WOMAD Festival in the UK. Matthew Barley is not only recognized as a world class cellist in his own right but over the past three years Barley has also masterminded Viktoria Mullova's Through the Looking Glass project (Decca CD and a world tour of 27 concerts), a tour with jazz pianist Nikki Yeoh and several ground breaking performances with his experimental, cross-disciplinary group Between the Notes. This album presents a fusionesque concerto of two powerful stringed instruments. Based on the ragas Kirwani and Bhairavi the improvised compositions take on a life of their own in these two exhilarating high-energy performances.

It has long been Navras’s intention to bring out archival recordings of this great and legendary maestro. To trace the evolution of his music from the early years of his career to the more recent period. Although we would have liked to have started in the 1950’s these recordings are not yet made available to us. However, we shall start the process in the 1970’s commencing this journey midstream as it were. It is fascinating to notice the striking difference in style that evolved in the latter years from this earlier one. The vigor of a relatively younger age is apparent relative to a more reflective and pensive style in later years! Not much is known about the exact date or venue of this performance except that it was in the 1970’s. Anthology is a new series created by Navras to archive rare recordings that typify the work of great masters
