Terje Isungset, the "Ice Man" from Norway, has carved out his own style of music, anchored in traditional music, tribal in nature, but free as the wind. With Hibernation, he moves his music even further into regions of greater purity and authenticity, limiting the instruments even more, to ice percussion and ice horn, with the vocals of Sara Marielle Gaup. It all sounds so unbelievably fresh, authentic and pristine, with a naiveness and sense of wonder that is almost childlike, but at the same time also spiritual, devoid of any burdens that weigh on the soul. There is no direction to the music, it seems to arise spontaneously, calm and almost natural, without any sense of urgency. As a Norwegian critic put it "ice cold and so much warmth", which is possibly the best description of the music.

Norwegian percussionist Terje Isungset has for years used a variety of organic sound elements in creating music and instruments. He has incorporated the sound of naturally found wood, stone, metal objects, and industrial machines and processes in the creation of musical works. Utilizing ice as a source of sound has long been a dream of his, and in year 2000 a serious opportinty came along to explore this possibility. He was commisioned the create a performance piece and composition incorporating the live sound of water beneath a natural frozen waterfall at the 2000 Lillehammer Winter Festival, at minus 15°C degrees and with Palle Mikkelborg og Lena Willemark as participating musicians. (the consert was televised in Norway). This was likely the first public concert ever combining instruments of ice with traditional musical instruments. While making preparations for the Lillehammer concert, Isungset was contacted to help create Swedens contribution to the worldwide televised New Years Day Millenium Celebration. In cooperation with sculptor Bengt Carling, Isungset created a set of ice percussion instruments that were played for the whole world to see and hear.

The Jew’s harp is an international instrument, but also typically Norwegian in the sense that distinctively Norwegian dance tunes have been created on the instrument for many years. Two of Norway’s top Jew’s harp performers demonstrate its versatility with traditional and contemporary tunes. Musicians: Hallgrim Berg and Erik Røine.

The host country for the International Jew’s Harp Festival of 2002 is situated on the Scandinavian Peninsula together with Sweden. The presence of the Jew’s harp here has been documented since as early as the 1200s. The core areas of the Jew’s harp in Norwegian folk music are Setesdal, Telemark, Hallindal, Valdres and Gudbrandsdalen. Many skilled Jew’s harp craftsmen and performers have maintained the instrument’s traditions during the last two centuries. Technically categorized as 'plucked idiophones', these instruments are made from bamboo or more commonly from forged metal (usually iron, sometimes silver). They have a thin frame with either a rectangular, onion/lyre or elongated shape. One end of the frame is closed, the other end left open. Attached to the closed end is a single key or tongue, which you pluck with your finger. Usually made from the same material as the frame, it produces a buzzing tone of surprising variety! Holding the closed end in your mouth, you can make different pitches and sounds by changing the size and shape of your mouth, which acts as a natural resonating chamber. (2 CDs + 1 DVD)
