Ils voudraient avoir un corps (They would like to have a body) – this line from a poem by Paul Eluard could characterize the works on this CD, for they have one thing in common – the attempt to come to terms with body, space and time. The basic material consists of synthetically generated sound points, sound complexes or an existing composition, and this is given the impression of depth (by means of reverberation and a special distribution over several loudspeakers). Sound processes are thus created which distance themselves from their basis and even alienate themselves, and whose very being is led from the concrete to the abstract.

The combination of speech and music is at the heart of the conception of Tangent. The mutual challenge of two media of a completely different nature – conceptual speech on the one hand, and non-conceptual music attached to no concrete object on the other – opens up an aesthetic field of tension, which extends from the musical comprehension of the semantic, via the processing of speech samples to the internalised ”speech” of a world of sound. The compositions which have been chosen for this CD show various ways of musically responding to a language text or single speech structures – in context, fragmentary or imaginary.

There is a kaleidoscope of 5 compositions on this CD. Artificial clichés creates an acoustic picture in which the view of nature which is shown is not natural enough to be perceived as it should be, but the artificial is not artificial enough to be explicitly not art.
Einstimmig… (For one voice …) deals with a woman’s voice. In this piece vibrations of the vocal chords, speech sounds and the melody of the scream are processed in sound.
Through form and colour in in the mix musical and scenic sequences are joined or rather conveyed, and the scenic sequences allow associations with real events.
5 kleine Stücke über die kleinen Laute eines kleinen Menschen (5 little pieces about the little noises of a little person) deals with the natural noises of a baby which are changed to the point of being unrecognisable but nevertheless always allow their origin to shine through.
In Orpheus and Demokrit (piano music with tape), sounds created by the piano form the basis of the tape part. Larger arcs are formed in such a way that one’s attention is shifted from the actual hitting of the keys to the vibration of the body of the piano and, thus, a kind of song is created.
