The Alpine Symphony may be seen as an orchestral picture postcard, but it also encloses a journey of the spirit, being perhaps Strauss's most Nietzschean work, as explained in Michael Kennedy's booklet notes, specially written for this RLPO Live album. We contrast this Herculean symphony with Strauss' early Suite in B Flat. Dating only from Strauss's 20th year, it already displays the skill and understanding with which he composed and orchestrated throughout his life.
