HENRY PURCELL (1659 – 1695): A New Irish Tune; Air en Bourée; Ayre in G minor (Cembalo solo); Hornpipe in G minor; Jig in G minor; A Ground in Gamut; Toccata in A major (Cembalo solo); Suite in D/d (Cembalo solo); Trumpet tune (Cembalo solo); Sebell; A New Ground in E minor (Cembalo solo); Hornpipe in E minor; A New Ground in E minor DANIEL PURCELL (ca. 1664 – 1717): Sonatas I-III & VI; Toccata in A minor; Chaconne in A minor Ensemble Mediolanum: Sabine Ambos, recorder; Felix Koch, cello; Wiebke Weidanz, harpsichord Henry Purcell, celebrated even during his lifetime as an "Orpheus Brittannicus", has enjoyed enduring fame whereas his brother Daniel, five years his junior, has been completely eclipsed over the course of the centuries. However, Daniel was also a successful composer in his day – particularly of theatre music in the years following his brother's premature death. Nowadays it is not widely known that Henry even had a brother. Here Ensemble Mediolanum (Sabine Ambos, recorder) juxtapose works by Daniel Purcell and Henry Purcell, demonstrating the stylistic diversity of their music and the remarkable compositional abilities of both men. The result is an exciting, varied and wholly compelling program. |
