CELLO CLASSICS

LUIGI BOCCHERINI:
Label: CELLO CLASSICS 1001
Our Price: $19.00
Quantity in Basket: none
FIVE SONATAS FOR CELLO AND CONTINUO (Played on period instruments): Sonata in D major G.563*; Sonata in g minor; G.562*; Sonata in Eb major G.567*; Sonata in C major G.6; Sonata in G major G.5. Sebastian Comberti, cello; Elizabeth Kenny, archlute/guitar; Ruth Alford, cello. including recently discovered works recorded here for the first time Premiere Recording*For the first release, Cello Classics has chosen to bring out something of a coup, in hitherto unplayed works by the first great composer for the cello to achieve universal recognition, Luigi Boccherini. Three of the sonatas on this disc have been obtained from manuscripts until recently in a private collection, and provide a wonderful addition to the classical cello repertoire. -Sebastian Comberti has been involved in the period instrument revival in London since the early 1980s and has made the study of late 18th Century cello repertoire something of a speciality. This recording has been made using original instruments with a continuo team unusually comprising archlute/guitar and cello, providing a rich and yet light accompaniment to these delightful works. It is bound to be of interest to lovers of the cello and scholars alike. "Technically....outstanding. Comberti's tone is clean and even, his phrasing impeccable."-- Gramophone October 2001 -"Cellist Comberti has an excellent tone, and clearly has mastered this music. Boccherini's cello sonatas deserved to be discovered by all those who enjoy post-baroque music." --MusicWeb July 2001"The three later sonatas on this disc are World Premiere Recordings and are particularly rewarding compositionally. Comberti brings great flair to these performances which sparkle with vitality, each movement being sharply characterised. The phrasing is tastefully conceived, with a pleasing elegance and grace, coupled with a vivid awareness of dynamics. In addition the recording quality is particularly clear, which suits the repertoire and makes this a thoroughly enjoyable CD." --Joanne Talbot The Strad August 2001

WEBER/PIATIGORSKY, ET AL.
Label: CELLO CLASSICS 1002
Our Price: $19.00
Quantity in Basket: none
VIRTUOSO CELLO TRANSCRIPTIONS - Frescobaldi/Cassadó: Toccata; Locatelli/Piatti: Sonata in D; Popper: Dance of the Elves; Autumn Flower; Happy Recollections; Weber/Piatigorsky: Adagio and Rondo; Klengel: Scherzo; Ginastera/Fournier: Triste; Martinu: Variations on a Theme of Rossini; Schnittke/Shafran: Suite "In Olden Style". Leonid Gorokhov, cello; Bobby Chen, piano.- This rare collection of works offers an insight into the creative heritage of the great cellists of the past as composers and arrangers. "Virtuoso Cello Transcriptions"combines highly virtuosic performing with a nostalgic look at the past, ranging from the baroque through to Schnittke. Since his studies with Nikitin and Shafran, and following early successes at competitions in Paris and Geneva, Leonid Gorokhov has been in great demand as soloist with orchestras throughout Europe. A large discography for Melodya and Supraphon has won many plaudits and his recent CD "Russian Discoveries" was voted Record of the Month by London's Classic FM. -"Between the mercurial movements, such as Frescobaldi¹s Toccata, we can enjoy Gorokhov¹s smooth and lyrical qualities in the slow movements, the elegance of the Adagio in Locatelli's Sonata being of rare beauty. His bowing technique is so wonderfully fluid, Weber's Adagio being just one of the examples of his seamless legato." The Strad August 2001-"Especially good however is the trilogy of Popper showpieces in which Gorokhov shows himself a deftly spirited advocate. A promising start for a new label that’s certain to excite cello devotees, and whose promised historical bias should also have general wider appeal." Michael Jameson, BBC Music Magazine August 2001

EMANUEL FEUERMANN - RARE RECORDINGS 1934 TO 1942
Label: CELLO CLASSICS 1003
Our Price: $19.00

EMANUEL FEUERMANN – RARE RECORDINGS 1934 TO 1942 -- ANTONIN DVORAK: Concerto Op. 104: Slow Mvt.; ISAAC ALBENIZ: Tango; ERNEST BLOCH: Prayer from Jewish Life; FREDERIC CHOPIN: Nocturne in Eb Op.9 No.2; Introduction and Polonaise Brillante; KARL DAVIDOFF: At the Fountain; GEORG FREDERIC HANDEL: Adagio and Allegro; FELIX MENDELSSOHN: Spring Song Op. 62 No.6; DAVID POPPER: Spinning Song; ANTON RUBINSTEIN: Melody in F; PABLO DE SARASATE: Zapateado; ROBERT SCHUMANN: Zigeunerleben Op. 29 No 3; GIOVANNI SGAMBATI: Serenata Napoletana; PYOTR TCHAIKOVSKY: Valse Sentimantale Op. 51 No. 6; GIUSEPPE VALENTINI: Gavotta and Allegro. Accompaniment: Franz Rupp, piano; Wolfgang Rebner, piano; Theo van der Pas, piano; Teddy Saidenberg, piano; Orchestra and Frank Black; Gerald Moore, piano; Albert Hirsch, piano. The first in Cello Classics’ Historical Series, we are herewith presenting several recordings made by one of the greatest cellists of the twentieth century, while at the height of his powers. Before his untimely death at the age of only 39, Emanuel Feuermann was in demand worldwide; indeed the recordings in this collection span three continents, studio recordings, a live broadcast and a rare early television broadcast. --What makes this collection so exciting to lovers of great cello playing, and the work of Feuermann in particular, is that some of the tracks are here presented for the first time on CD; indeed, several have never appeared since they were originally released on 78s in the 1930s. The rendition of Popper’s “Spinning Song” is a remarkable performance of a truly virtuosic miniature, and must be heard to be believed. "Cello Classics (an offshoot of Clarinet Classics) have come up with a CD of rare Emanuel Feuermann recordings, including dazzling virtuoso performances of pieces by Popper and Sarasate as well as Feuermann's very last recording, the slow movement from Victor Herbert's cello concerto (with piano). The sound quality varies but the playing combines seductive tonal luster with outrageous dexterity. The Popper in particular parades so many notes in such quick succession that you would never expect them all to register accurately. And they do!" -- Gramophone August 2001
