  • Orchestra Sinfonica Abruzzese/Francesco Quattrocchi
    Andrea Coen, harpsichord
This recording is dedicated to Italian orchestral music composed by contemporaries of Mozart, in particular to the sinfonie of the “musical comedies” or “comic operas” of the years between 1760 and 1780, a period in which Italian comic opera was the favorite “divertimento” of European courts. Usually performers and concert programs disregard these sinfonie, concentrating on the operas that follow, but these overtures should be regarded as important elements, introducing all the numerous typologies incorporated into Italian comic opera of that time. For a representative selection, we have chosen several of the most fashionable themes in vogue during those years. The first part of the recording illustrates the popular Oriental theme, whether real or imaginary, presented on stages in Naples. The second presents an ideal bridge between the two most important poles of Italian opera during the 1700s, Naples and Venice.
