Gerusalemme, oratorio in due parti per soli, cori ed orchestre (1900) - Marco Camastra, baritone; Gianni Puddu, tenor; Emidio Guidotti, bass; Orchestra Filarmonica Marchigiana/Arturo Sacchetti; Corale “Cento Torri”/Bernardo Azzara; Corale Lauretana/Giuliano Viabile; Corale Pesarese/Roberto Renili
  • The oratorio “Gerusalemme” - this was the original title on the autographic score, later changed into “L’entrata di Cristo in Gerusalemme” - was conceived and composed in a very short time, as it was usual for Lorenzo Perosi: page 1 is dated “Venice-Milan (on a train) Jan. 9, 1900 and page 240, the last one, “Naples, Febr. 2, 1900”. Forty days to conceive a gigantic oratorio, the most complex one ever created by the author (two choirs, a principal one and a second one offstage, a large orchestra with quadruple woodwind, offstage brass, two harps, three solo voices) are indeed a very short time, even taking into account Perosi’s exceptional ability “to think” while composing on the score.

The oratorio The Resurrection of Christ was composed in August 1898 between Tortona and Adorno Micca, a lovely place in the surroundings of Biella, where Lorenzo Perosi went to find relief from the Roman summer heat, being a guest of the parish priest, and was completed by September 26th of the same year, in Tortona. This composition is articulated in three sections, written in different periods during the same year 1897. The first, The Supper of the Lord, subtitled Cantata in the style of Bach, was composed on the occasion of the Third Eucharistic national Congress, called by the Patriarch of Venice Giuseppe Sarto, who was also the author of the text based on the Gospel according to Mark, on November 2nd, 1896, for the second week of August 1897. The second part, the Prayer on the Mount of Olives, and the third, The death of the Saviour, originally entitled the Crucifixion of Our Lord, were added later. The first and the third parts had been conceived as Cantatas, but this formal definition was abandoned when the three parts were gathered and structured into an oratorio, formally a Trilogy. The fact that each of the three parts bears a different dedication stands to witness that the oratorio was not conceived as an unitary and consequential piece, but as a musical setting of three different moments of the Passion.

The oratorio In patris memoriam, was composed by Lorenzo Perosi in 1909-1910, after the deep sorrow for his father's death, which occurred in Rome on November 25, 1908. This piece grew gradually in his heart since December 1908, as it is witnessed by the thoughts he confided to his friend Giovanni Tebaldini: “I am beginning to realize the loss of my beloved father, and, living with my family, I feel, every day more, the void left by his death. He died as the Saints do, leaving us his faith, which, for him, meant life!”. He seems to pull from his nostalgic memories his father's aims and wishes: “My father used to refer to the possibility of being admitted as singer in Milan Cathedral as a dream, as a glorious aim to be reached. Instead, what unexpected tears of joy he would have shed for my career!”.
