This CD offers a collection of "other" enterprises of the Senese baritone, forty years after his premature death. It is an astonishing anthology from a musical career that lasted less than ten years (the period covered by the CD is referred to the golden five years from 1954 to 1958), cut short by a cruel illness, and that, beyond the sufferings he kept concealed in the last years, would have ended up with the blatant incomprehension of the audience. In those brilliant ten years, though, Bastianini has represented for baritones what Del Monaco used to be for tenors. With the great tenor, colleague and rival on stage and in recording studios, Bastianini has also shared the blame of the critics for that rushing vocal style that sometimes swept away the dynamic and expressive indications of the score to flow into a sumptuous singing. The gloomy beauty of his timbre, together with his fine appearance on stage, awakened ancient popular passions. His voice was extraordinarily dense, capturing for its overwhelming sensuality, enriched by his naturally elegant elocution shaped upon the Senese accent and by his compelling communicativeness.
