Four Movements for Piano Trio (1990); String Quartet No. 3 (1993); Three Songs for Pipa and Violoncello (1999); String Quartet No. 4 “Silent Temple” (2000) - Bright Sheng, piano; Weigang Li, violin; Nicholas Tzavaras, cello; Shanghai Quartet (Weigang Li, violin I; Yiwen Jiang, violin II; Honggang Li, viola; Nicholas Tzavaras, cello); Wu Man, pipa - Two years ago we released a disc of orchestral music by Bright Sheng that was very warmly received: “easily recommended to listeners looking for colorful, attractive orchestral music off the beaten track” (Fanfare), “Sheng has successfully developed his own kind of East-West fusion, glamorous, but with a wide range of expression” (Gramophone). Bright Sheng, who was born in Shangha in 1955, started studying the piano with his mother at the age of four. During the Cultural Revolution he worked as a pianist and percussionist in a folk music and dance troupe in Chinghai Province near the Tibetan border for seven years. During this period he also studied and collected folk music. In 1978, when universities reopened, he was one of the first students accepted by Shanghai Conservatory of Music, where he earned a degree in composition. He moved to New York in 1982 and attended Queens College as well as Columbia University. Among his main teachers were Leonard Bernstein (composition and conducting), Jack Beeson, Chou Wen-Chung, George Perle and Hugo Weisgall. This new disc presents a programme of chamber music by Bright Sheng [String quartet, piano trio and a fascinating duo made up of the traditional Chinese “pipa” (a type of lute) accompanied by the cello. Memories of Chinese and Tibetan melodies and sonorities are very much in evidence here and Bright Sheng uses the string quartet with great skill and originality. He succeeds in writing accessible music with hauntingly beautiful sounds, proving again that the string quartet is still capable of development even in a listener-friendly direction! This disc will surly ensure Bright Sheng many new friends.

THREE JEWISH POEMS - Symphony in E Flat Major; Evocations: Symphonic Suite; 3 Jewish Poems for large orchestra - Malmo Symphony Orchestra; A. Boreyko, conductor. The three works here come from very different periods in Bloch's life. The Three Jewish Poems come from just before WWI, a period where Bloch admitted he was seeking to express his understanding about Jewishness in the arts. The Symphonic Suite is inspired by Chinese art and the Symphony is neo-classic in design and sound.

STRING ORCHESTRA arrangements - Grosse Fugue in B Flat Major, Op. 133; String Quartet in C SharpMinor, Op. 131 - Nieuw Sinfonietta Amsterdam; P. Oundjian, cond. Peter Oundjian performed these works in their original quartet version many times when he was part of the Tokyo String Quartet.
