GIUSEPPE VERDI: String Quartet in E minor (1873); GIACOMO PUCCINI; Crisantemi (1890); Three Fugues; Scherzo; Three Minuets in A major; Tempo di Quartetto; Quartetto David. Grand opera from BIS? And by such giants of musical drama as Verdi and Puccini? A closer look at the details will put minds at rest! This is, indeed, a disc of splendid music by two of the greatest of operatic composers but there is not a diva in sight – or in earshot. The present disc is devoted to music for string quartet. In the case of Verdi this was a late offering in the form of a splendid quartet. Puccini’s contribution – much less frequently performed – consists of shorter pieces for string quartet from his youth. The string quartet has, of course, such a special place in musical history that the quartet-writing of any great composer is intrinsically interesting. The performances on this disc are in the eloquent hands of the composers’ fellow Italians, the Quartetto David. This ensemble is familiar to BIS enthusiasts for its three volumes of quartets by another portal figure in Italian opera, Cherubini; discs which were very warmly welcomed as “clearly the finest cycle of Cherubini's quartets currently available". A disc that should arouse a good deal of curiosity.
