ARTISTS: Thomas Michael Allen, tenor; Reinild Mees, piano
As a composer of Lieder, Felix Mendelssohn has generally been judged not to rank with leading exponents of the genre such as Franz Schubert, Robert Schumann or Hugo Wolf. Unlike these composers, Mendelssohn left no sizeable, overarching song cycles, nevertheless his Lieder have been unjustifiably neglected. He composed songs throughout his career, and produced many exquisitely crafted, subtly turned examples. Mendelssohn’s song-writing art is primarily one of nuance and gesture, not of bold dramatic effects. The tenor Thomas Michael Allen has established a reputation for his vivid representations of a wide range of operatic roles. His repertoire includes operas by Monteverdi and haute contre roles of the French baroque, as well as leading roles in the operas of Mozart and recent works of composers such as Hans Werner Henze and Philip Glass. |
