JOHANNES BRAHMS (1833 - 1897) - LIEDER - SONGS - VOLUME 3 Vier Gesänge Op. 43; Vier Gesänge Op. 70; Sechs Lieder Op. 86; Vier Lieder Op. 96; Fünf Lieder Op. 105Deborah Polaski, sopranoChristian Elsner, tenorCharles Spencer, piano Nowadays, we seem uncomfortable with the idea of Brahms as a composer inspired by the word. He is so often associated with the great genres of instrumental music – the symphony, the sonata, the quartet – which we tend to disregard the central role of the word in his musical life. It is true that in the polemics which raged in the last decades of nineteenth-century Vienna, Brahms was frequently extolled as the standard-bearer of the absolutists - that is to say, of those who believed that music needs no explanation outside itself – and that he had scant sympathy for the programmatic works of Liszt and his acolytes, but Brahms never disowned the power of other arts to inspire music. Of all the arts, however, Brahms was most deeply inspired by the word. His catalogue of works contains over two hundred songs for solo voice, not to mention the numerous folksong arrangements or the substantial collection of duets and quartets. Brahms was not a Schumann who poured out his heart in great lyrical floods; rather, a regular succession of songs intersperses his entire career. The American soprano Deborah Polaski numbers among the most prominent dramatic sopranos of our time and can be heard in all of the world’s major opera houses and concert halls. Statements such as “A great moment in art song” (FAZ), “rare musical sensitivity” (Financial Times), and “impressive stage presence” (Die Welt) give evidence of the great reputation that Christian Elsner enjoys in the areas of art song, oratorio, and opera.
