That is how music of political resistance such as that of Shostakovich or Schnittke snaked its way out of Stalinist Russia to the freedom of America into the world and back to its roots, where it slowly found an audience. On the other side there is one of the greatest composers of the New World, Aaron Copland, who stands for the integration and fusion of European classical music with immigrant folk music and the tonality and rhythms developed by Afro-Americans. Going along with these words by the author and first president of West Germany the editor and the artists on this CD of well-known masterpieces of music spanning three centuries, countries and cultural environments -have chosen the perspective of HUMANITY for this project.
